The NPA (New People’s Army) claimed responsibility on Monday for the ambush that claimed the lives of three soldiers on Sunday morning in Barangay Baquerohan. The soldiers, a non-commissioned officer and two soldiers, members of the 31st Infantry Battalion, were attacked by the guerrillas at 8:25 am as they were riding a motorbike to the Legazpi town police station. Another non-commissioned officer was injured.
Guerrillas said the operation was carried out in retaliation for various crimes committed by the military in the region such as the murder of Eddie Bellugo in Barangay Banquerohan and the massacre of five peasants in Barangay Dolos. In the Bicol region, the guerrillas counted 34 extra-judicial executions, four massacres, 144 military raids, illegal arrests, torture and the staging of false surrenders of so-called guerrillas.
