Anarchist comrade Burak Özgüner died Saturday in Kadikoy, Istanbul at age 32. Burak was a long-time organizer for animal justice who was facing absurd terrorism charges just because he was one of the organizers of a demonstration for animals who were killed during Gezi Park protests.
The following is from a statement by Freedom to Earth:
“Burak played a major role to initiate several grassroots organizations including ours -Freedom to Earth.
Although initial forensic medical examinations hint heart attact during sleep as the death cause, we want to emphasize two points: (1) Nonstop struggle in the name of trans people in Turkey whose rights are violated and animals whose bodies are solely regarded as food (especially feeling their pain right in his heart all the time) was eventually too much burden on him. (2) Burak was being prosecuted in more than one cases, such as absurd terrorism charges just because he was one of the organizers of a demonstration for animals who were killed during Gezi Park protests. In a way, the Turkish state has killed Burak with methods of oppression.
More than 200 friends of Burak Özgüner have attended his funeral that took place last Sunday in his hometown Sarıyer, Istanbul. Burak’s grave is located in Kilyos Mezarlığı.”
Selection from a speech by Burak Özgüner in 2015:
“I do not believe in hypocritical justice or State order, authority, and even, most of the time in Turkey, I find “justice” dangerous to society and I say that anarchy is the only order for me…
I want to live this life as an anarchist and animal libertarian in the face of this really stinking order, trying to keep the relations of domination and violence as far away from me as possible without taking orders from anyone, obeying any authority and killing nobody.”
