Over 100 people in Memphis rose up after news spread that a U.S. Marshals Service officer had fatally shot Brandon Webber in front of his mother’s house. The young black man was shot 20 times by the enemy officer.
Webber’s relative expressed indignation, “My cousin’s down there, laying in the street! Laying in the yard!”
Neighbors flooded the streets in response, using a chair to smash out the back window of a police car, smashing the windows of a fire station and injurying two dozen police officers with concrete rocks.
While these acts of retribution are not equal to the life they took, they are a significant act of resistance to the continued extermination of black people by the police.
