With the pandemic increasing in the Chilean territory, different mobilizations and actions have been registered in the prisons by the prisoners to try to prevent the virus and raise their claims.
One of them was in the high security prison in Santiago: since the end of April, modules 2 and 3 h north continued participating in a hungry strike (not to be confused with a hunger strike) where the prisoners who habitually distribute food did not, in protest. To this was added a widespread knocking of bars and doors. The hungry strike lasted for about 40 days, while the “sticks” lasted 50 days. In early June, the mobilization ended spontaneously.
Today, in mid-June, with the pandemic unleashed in Chile, it was a matter of time for it to spread rapidly in prisons due to the level of overcrowding in which they find themselves.
As anarchists and prison abolitionists, we stand in solidarity with the prisoners in struggle and salute subversive comrade Marcelo Villarroel, who remained active in the mobilizations in the high-security prison, where he demanded–among other demands–that intra-penitentiary benefits be granted for those who meet the basic requirements, and that Law 321 (which regulates parole) be repealed, so that it is applied accordingly and not retroactively.
Recall that Marcelo carries a sentence of more than 40 years for urban guerrilla actions in times of dictatorship and democracy, condemnations emanating from the military justice in a ridiculous way - full of irregularities - in times where power, if it did not murder the combatants, used decades-long prison sentences as punishment. So it is necessary to spread, agitate, make visible this legal situation so that our comrade can qualify for intra-penitentiary benefits, even more in these uncertain times with a pandemic that has taken the lives of thousands of people around the world.
PRISONERS TO THE STREET!
BY THE END OF LAW 321!
FOR THE END OF THE CONDITIONS OF MILITARY JUSTICE AGAINST MARCELO!
