TPNPB-OPM (National Liberation Army of West Papua-Free Papua Movement) have issued a statement claiming responsibility for an attack against the Brimob (Mobile Brigade Corps / Indonesia Special Operations Police) post at Keneyam Airport in Nduga Regency.
The attack took place at 06:45AM on 11.01.2020 and was led by Bridgen Egianus Kogeya, the Nduga Region Commander of the TPNPB-OPM. The attack resulted in the shooting of two Brimob members – one of them receiving fatal injuries.
This is just the latest clash in a massively under-reported war between the National Liberation Army of West Papua and the occupying colonial forces of the Indonesian State that has intensified since December 1st, 2018 when the TPNPB attacked a Trans-Papua Highway construction site in Nduga Regency.
On January 5th, 2020, TPNPB reported that they had shot dead a member of the TNI (Indonesian Armed Forces) in Intan Jaya Regency and that the Indonesian State had left the body to rot in the jungle as they were unable to safely carry out an evacuation.
On December 25th, 2019, TPNPB reported that they carried out a raid against an Indonesian Security Forces base camp in Gulapa Village, Intan Jaya Regency. During this raid the TPNPB seized 3 bazookas, 3 machine guns, 3 bullet boxes, several ATM and identification cards and about 700 thousand Indonesian Rupiah.
The base camp had been evacuated earlier by the Indonesian Security Forces due to an attack by the TPNPB on December 21st that resulted in the deaths of 6 TNI members.
In their most recent statement, TPNPB stated that they were not afraid of the prospects of retaliatory airstrikes by the Indonesian Armed Forces and that they would continue to wage resistance until West Papua gains full independence.
