On Wednesday April 22, residents of Veeplaas (a district of Port Elizabeth) took to the streets en masse on Tuesday to protest against the lack of food parcels.

The police arrived 15 minutes later and fired tear gas and rubber bullets.

The demonstrators barricaded the road with stones, logs, wire, broken glass and tires which they burned. In the Veeplaas district, 2,404 people needed a food parcel, but only 70 had arrived.
