Guatemalan indigenous leaders Isidro Pérez Pérez and Melecio Ramirez, members of the Committee of Campesino Development (CODECA), were killed on Friday, July 5th, in Nuevo Edén, a village in the eastern municipality of Livingston.

Last year, six members of CODECA were murdered in Guatemala. No one has been arrested for these atrocities.

CODECA has released a communique about the event. Excerpts below.

“A new, bloody fact has sent communities of the countryside into mourning.

Today, Friday, the 5th of July, 2019, during a peaceful action in defense of land rights, developing in the village of Nuevo Edén, Chocón Machacas, municipality of Livingston, Izabal, comrades Isidro Perez Perez and Melecio Ramirez, members of the Committee of Campesino Development (CODECA), were assassinated.

This fact adds to the repression maintained against our organization by sectors of economic power and organized crime, supported by repressive forces of the State, in an attempt to halt the advance of permanent struggles for the defense of Rights.

We condemn these facts, and demand the immediate cessation of both criminalization of and repression against members of CODECA…

In spite of the repression and criminalization, our struggles will continue and strengthen….The right to land is a fundamental right.

In spite of the repression and criminalization, our struggles will continue and strengthen….The right to land is a fundamental right.

It is always darkest before dawn…”
