The adoption of a new law restricting the right to demonstrate has provoked the anger of the Greek left. New regulations include reducing street space for small demonstrations and the right for police to ban certain gatherings, including counter-demonstrations. More than 12,000 people therefore took to the streets of Athens on Thursday 9 July to protest against this law. Police officers fired tear gas at a demonstration near Parliament as protesters threw Molotov cocktails.
