Dr Issam Hijjawi Bassalat and Irish Republican prisoners went on a hunger strike on September 16 to protest the isolation of Dr Hijjawi Bassalat by the prison authorities. Dr Hijjawi Bassalat, who is a prominent representative of the Palestinian community in Scotland, was arrested along with nine Irish Republicans in an operation which involved Britain’s MI5, Irish Gardaí, Scottish Police, London Metropolitan Police and more 500 officers from the Northern Ireland Police Service (PSNI). This “Operation Arbacia” officially targeted the New IRA.
Dr Issam Hijjawi Bassalat, 62, began his hunger strike on September 16, when he was again forced into solitary confinement in the Foyle House module in Maghaberry prison in Northern Ireland. Irish Republican prisoners immediately went on a solidarity hunger strike in support of Issam. Earlier today, Issam’s bail was denied. He will now go to the High Court to await his trial for freedom. Dr Issam Hijjawi Bassalat has several health issues and had an MRI this week. Foyle House is a dangerous prison, affected by the Covid-19.
