Clashes in Chiapas in Response to State Repression

Published March 18, 2019

On Friday, March 15th, the state police evicted the Movimiento Campesino Regional Independiente Emiliano Zapata (MOCRI-Zapata) from land they had expropriated north of the capital of Chiapas. They resisted the eviction with machetes, sticks, and stones, and were able to recover two police firearms during the eviction. In response to state aggression, groups blocked roads and a market in the town centre, destroyed a Plaza El Sol shopping centre and public buildings, and seized public transport vehicles.
